Une promenade dans les bois de Pan
for flute
‘Une Promenade Dans Les Bois de Pan’ was written in 2020 for flutist Eleni Kappa. At her request, the inspiration for the piece was taken from Greek mythology, in particular the notable Earth-dwelling god and flute player, Pan. Far from reflecting the jolly, merry-loving nature typically associated with this god, the piece attempts to evoke the deity’s darker, more sinister nature: the Pan who loves to frighten travelers passing through the woods unaware; that side of his personality from which the word ‘panic’ takes its shape.
The piece begins with three musical ‘cells’, each distinct from the other in character, which then expand, change, and eventually morph into one another as the piece progresses.Another central element are the notes C-sharp, D-sharp, and E, which are repeated, inverted, and varied throughout.
